Japan is bracing for super typhoon Hagibis, which is on track to reach the eastern region of the country tomorrow, bringing gale force winds, potential flooding, tidal waves and storm surges.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a series of warnings, noting that the typhoon is likely to hit Tokyo on Saturday.

Local residents are being urged to make the necessary preparations and remain at home, as rail transport is likely to come to a standstill.

Major sporting events scheduled over the coming three-day weekend have already been impacted by the approaching storm.

This includes the cancellation of two Rugby World Cup matches on Saturday, and a major marathon in Sendai. Formula One events at Suzuka are also likely to be affected.

ChildFund is closely monitoring the situation and will provide disaster support to partners on the ground if requested.

Our thoughts are with the Japanese children and families likely to be impacted by this extreme weather event, as well as the global rugby community currently in Japan, who have so generously supported our role as RWC principal charity partner.
